If you’ve ever spent a Sunday afternoon wandering down Chicon Street, you already know the soundtrack to East Austin’s weekends. Every Sunday from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, the community gathers at Dear Diary Coffee for one of the most welcoming, creative, and eclectic open mics in the city.
At the center of it all is Rusty Paige, the host, curator, and heartbeat behind the mic.
For half a decade, Rusty has carved out a safe, supportive space for Austin’s musicians, poets, comedians, and storytellers to share their art. And this August, it’s time to throw a party worthy of that legacy.

What to Expect: A Mini-Festival of Local Art
This isn't your average Sunday evening sign-up sheet. To celebrate five incredible years, Rusty is pulling out all the stops for an all-day, mini-festival experience right at the cafe.
A Loaded Lineup of Live Music: Instead of the usual quick open mic sets, the afternoon will feature showcase performances from some of the incredible local musicians and regulars who have graced the stage over the last five years.
Diverse Featured Artists: Beyond the music, the celebration will highlight a variety of multi-disciplinary artists from the Dear Diary community, making it a true cross-section of Austin's independent creative scene.
The Ultimate Community Reunion: Whether you’ve taken the mic yourself, snapped photos from the crowd, or just ordered a latte while someone bared their soul on acoustic guitar, this is a day to celebrate the community that built this tradition.

Hosting an open mic for five weeks takes work; keeping one thriving for five years takes an immense amount of love for local art. Rusty Paige has become a staple of the East Austin community, offering a launchpad for emerging creatives and a reliable home for seasoned performers.
