Swap Words, Sip Coffee: Join Our New Weekly Language Club!
Have you ever tried to learn a new language on an app, only to realize that shouting "El gato come manzanas" at your screen doesn’t exactly prepare you for a real-world conversation?
We’ve all been there. Learning a language is meant to be social, dynamic, and—dare we say—fun! That’s why we are launching Language Club at Dear Diary Coffee, a weekly meetup designed to bridge the gap between English and Spanish speakers right here in our Austin community.
Whether you're trying to perfect your conversational Spanish or looking to master everyday English, this is your sign to stop scrolling and start talking.

How It Works (No Lectures, We Promise!)
When you arrive, we’ll pair you up: one native English speaker and one native Spanish speaker. For the next hour, you’ll become each other’s guides, trading native language secrets through a series of structured, interactive games.
The best part? We accommodate folks at every single level. It doesn’t matter if you only know how to say “hola” or if you are already semi-fluent and just need to shake off the rust. You and your partner get to pick the activity that matches your comfort zone.
Here is a sneak peek at the activities you can choose from:
Level 1: Take a Tour (Dar un recorrido) – Perfect for absolute beginners. You and your partner will walk around the room or go outdoors, pointing at objects and naming them in your native languages. You’ll even get a handy cheat sheet with phonetic pronunciation guides like "Guat is dis?" to help you ask for help along the way!
Level 2: Make a Sandwich (Preparar un sándwich) – A fun step-by-step game where one player acts out and describes how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich in their native language, and the other translates. Then you switch!
Level 2: Draw Your Wish (Dibuja tu deseo) – Put your Pictionary skills to the test. Draw something you wish for (like a giant bag of cash) and have your partner guess what it is in their native language.
Level 2: Be Polite (Sé cortés) – Practice real-world coffee shop interactions! Take turns playing the vendor and the customer, mastering how to politely order a coffee with sugar or give a warm Mexican Spanish response like "¡Claro que sí! Aquí tiene".
Level 3: Chit-Chat (Plática casual) – For intermediate to advanced speakers. In Round I, you speak strictly in your native language while your partner speaks in theirs. In Round II, you both flip the switch and talk entirely in your learning language.
Why You’ll Love It
Zero Preparation Required: We handle everything. I'll bring the custom print-outs with activity rules and useful phrases directly to the meetup. You just have to show up, grab a drink, and be ready to chat!
It’s a True Cultural Exchange: This isn't a rigid classroom. You’ll laugh through mispronunciations, learn local slang, and help someone else build their confidence.
We Need More English Learners! We currently have plenty of spots available for neighbors who want to practice their English. If you have friends, family members, or coworkers looking for a welcoming space to practice, please invite them!
